Rachel Walsh has built her career across luxury, fashion, and sports lifestyle, and now leads Marketing & Communications for Moët Hennessy UK & Ireland. She speaks to Luxury People Magazine about earning attention, finding an authentic place in culture, and why the smallest brand details can leave the greatest impression.

Luxury People Magazine: Rachel, you’ve worked across luxury, fashion, and sports lifestyle. What do you think makes someone feel a real connection with a brand rather than simply wanting to buy a product?

Rachel Walsh: For me, the strongest brands make you feel something.

Of course, the product has to be exceptional, particularly in luxury, but the product on its own isn’t enough to build a lasting connection.

The brands we remember tend to be connected to a feeling, a moment, a person, or a memory. They become part of our lives in some way.

That’s why I’ve always been interested in building brand worlds rather than just campaigns. What does the brand stand for? How does it make people feel? Where does it show up? What are the moments people associate with it?

LPM: Culture plays an increasingly important role in how brands connect with people. How can luxury brands participate in culture in a way that feels authentic?

RW: For me, it starts with knowing what your brand genuinely has a right to be part of.

Culture moves incredibly quickly, and brands don’t need to chase every conversation or every trend. Trying too hard to be relevant often has the opposite effect.

The strongest brands understand their own point of view and then find the cultural moments, communities, and occasions where there is a natural connection.

I’ve always believed brands need to think carefully about the occasions they can authentically own or show up in. That could be celebration, food, music, sport, art, or simply bringing people together.

For me, the question is always: are we adding something to the moment?

When the answer is yes, culture can be an incredibly powerful way to create emotional connection and long-term relevance.

LPM: We’re surrounded by more brands, content, and choice than ever. What do you think luxury brands need to do to genuinely earn people’s attention today?

RW: Attention is relatively easy to buy. Meaning is much harder to create.

We can reach people in more places than ever, but being visible doesn’t automatically make a brand desirable.

I’m much more interested in whether something resonates. Did someone feel something? Did they remember it? Did they talk about it? Did they want to be part of it?

Sometimes one brilliant experience can have far more impact than trying to be everywhere all the time.

LPM: There’s so much craft and expertise behind luxury products. How can brands bring people closer to those stories without simply telling them about it?

RW: Crafting exceptional experiences will always be how luxury brands can bring their clients into their brand worlds.

That can be brought to life in so many ways.

For example, luxury brands can partner with world-class chefs and hospitality partners to create tasting journeys that allow people to experience the product in a much richer way, through flavour, storytelling and incredible service.

For me, that’s when crafting creative experiences becomes really powerful. You’re not just explaining how a particular product is made; you’re allowing people to experience the passion and expertise behind it, in a way that is memorable.

Luxury brands should bring people genuine joy; that’s when you create a much deeper connection with the brand.

LPM: If you could change one thing about how luxury brands connect with their customers today, what would it be?

RW: I think sometimes we focus too much on the big moments that we forget that luxury is really the sum of every single brand touchpoint.

It’s how the product feels in your hand, the packaging, how it’s presented, how you’re welcomed into a space, the service you receive, the language a brand uses, and the small details you weren’t expecting.

Every one of those moments is an opportunity to reinforce what the brand stands for, make someone feel something, and create an unexpected moment of magic.

And it doesn’t have to be an extravagant gesture. Often it’s the smallest, most thoughtful detail that stays with you. Those details are what excite me every day.
