When we think of French tableware, certain names immediately come to mind. Their reputation is international, their heritage sometimes spans centuries, and their creations grace some of the world’s most beautiful tables.
But knowing a House does not always mean knowing how to read it.
What truly distinguishes one porcelain manufacturer from another? How can we recognise the signature of a crystal maker, the identity of a silversmith or the singularity of a fine table linen creator? What do their pieces tell us about their history, their craftsmanship and the evolution of the way we live?
It was to provide these keys to understanding that I created this mini-guide devoted to ten French Houses: Lalique, Ercuis, Bernardaud, Garnier-Thiebaut, Raynaud, Christofle, Saint-Louis, Alexandre Turpault, Gien and Beauvillé.
It follows on from an editorial series published over the summer, featuring one House each week. My intention was neither to establish a ranking nor to compile a simple catalogue of brands, but to reveal ten distinct identities and ten different interpretations of the French art of the table.
Some Houses embody the power of the material and mastery of the craft. Others stand out through their decorative language, their capacity for innovation, or the way in which they bring heritage and contemporary creation into dialogue. Each possesses its own codes, its own culture and a singular relationship with the table.
In a world where reputation can sometimes precede understanding, true luxury also lies in discernment: knowing how to look beyond the name, recognise the coherence of a creation, understand its provenance and choose a piece not only for what it displays, but for what it signifies.
This guide is an invitation to take a more attentive look at these Houses, their craftsmanship and the stories they continue to write. It is intended for collectors and enthusiasts, as well as professionals in luxury, hospitality, travel, and interior design who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the richness of French tableware and, in turn, share that understanding with others.
