What do ultra-high-net-worth clients really expect from luxury brands today, and what increasingly pushes them away?
This question shaped the latest WLCC Leadership Lounge, featuring Sabrina Piccinin, Founder & CEO of Haute Retreats, for a private conversation on the changing expectations of ultra-high-net-worth clients.
The session explored a shift that many luxury businesses are experiencing: exceptional products, beautiful environments, and high levels of service are no longer enough on their own. Today’s sophisticated clients increasingly value trust, relevance, discretion, genuine understanding, and relationships that feel personal rather than transactional.
Through examples from Sabrina’s work with luxury travelers and private clients, she shared how listening more carefully, advising honestly, and understanding what luxury means to the individual can create stronger client relationships and long-term value.
Key Insights from the Conversation
Honesty is the foundation of trust
Ultra-high-net-worth clients do not need brands to simply say yes. They value professionals who listen carefully, understand what they genuinely need, and are prepared to advise against a choice when it will not deliver the right experience.
For luxury businesses, this means looking beyond the immediate transaction. Sometimes the most valuable thing a brand can do is recommend a different solution. Long-term trust matters more than completing a sale.
Understand what luxury means to the individual client
There is no single definition of luxury.
Privacy, time, independence, family connection, prestige, and convenience can carry very different weight for different clients. Personalization therefore needs to begin before the experience itself is designed.
The key is to listen deeply enough to understand what each client truly values, rather than building an experience around assumptions about what a luxury client should want.
Stop chasing. Start being useful
Persistence does not always build relationships.
Repeated messages, pressure, and artificial urgency can quickly undermine the trust luxury brands are trying to establish. Sophisticated clients value space, discretion, and communication that has a clear purpose.
Rather than following up simply to ask for a decision, brands can provide something genuinely relevant — new information, availability, an opportunity, or insight that helps the client.
The shift is subtle but important: from chasing the client to creating value for the client.
Move from service provider to trusted advisor
When clients invest significant money, time, and emotion in an experience, luxury professionals carry a responsibility to guide their decisions.
Sabrina discussed the importance of being willing to recommend a different destination, product, or approach when it will better serve the client, even when fulfilling the original request would be easier.
This advisor mindset changes the nature of the relationship. Instead of simply executing requests, the luxury professional becomes someone whose judgment the client can trust.
Small, meaningful details can create the strongest memories
Going beyond expectations does not necessarily mean spending more.
It means knowing the client well enough to understand what will have personal significance.
During the conversation, Sabrina shared the example of a returning guest whose love of music inspired a surprise live performance during dinner. The impact came not simply from the performance itself, but from the fact that the gesture reflected genuine knowledge of the client.
In luxury, thoughtfulness can be more powerful than extravagance.
Trusted partnerships expand what you can offer the client
No luxury business needs, or should try, to provide everything alone.
The right partners can extend the client journey, introduce complementary expertise, and help create experiences that an individual business could not deliver independently.
This became an important part of the wider Leadership Lounge discussion: what could participants offer their clients through the right luxury partner that they cannot — or should not — provide alone?
Strong relationships across the luxury ecosystem can create better experiences for clients while opening new opportunities for referrals, collaborations and business growth.
From Insight to Connection
As with WLCC’s evolving Leadership Lounge format, the fireside conversation was only the beginning.
Participants introduced themselves and then moved into breakout discussions, creating an opportunity to explore the themes through the lens of their own businesses and industries.
The conversations encouraged participants not only to consider how they could strengthen relationships with their own clients, but also how the expertise of other leaders within the room could complement what they already offer.
This reflects an important principle behind the WLCC Leadership Lounge: industry insight becomes more valuable when it leads to relevant relationships, trusted partnerships, and opportunities to collaborate.
Speaker Reflection
“I truly enjoyed the WLCC Leadership Lounge. The fireside conversation was thoughtfully guided, with questions that addressed what genuinely matters to UHNW clients today. I particularly valued the interactive format, which gave participants the opportunity to translate the discussion into their own businesses. The quality of the participants also made the exchange especially meaningful and worthwhile.”

More Than an Online Event
The WLCC Leadership Lounge is designed to go beyond the traditional online event.
It is a private, intentionally limited forum where founders, executives, and senior decision-makers can discuss the realities shaping luxury, exchange perspectives with peers, and build relationships that can continue beyond the session.
Most importantly, the relationships created during the Lounge do not have to end when the Zoom session closes. The purpose is to create a trusted environment where an initial conversation can become an introduction, a collaboration, a referral, a partnership — or a new business opportunity.
What Luxury Leaders Can Take Forward
The central message from the conversation was clear: The next standard of luxury is not about offering more. It is about understanding better.
For today’s ultra-high-net-worth client, relevance is built through listening, honesty, restraint, thoughtful personalization, and trusted relationships — creating experiences around what clients genuinely value rather than what brands assume they want.
For luxury leaders, that creates three immediate opportunities:
- Deepen understanding of the individual client
- Approach the relationship as a trusted advisor rather than simply a service provider
- Build stronger partnerships with complementary luxury businesses.
